Specifications
Titanium-nickel clad plate is a bimetallic composite material made by bonding a layer of titanium to a nickel or nickel-alloy base. This material combines titanium's excellent corrosion resistance with nickel's strength, toughness, and heat resistance, making it ideal for use in chemical, marine, and energy industries.
Dimensions
Thickness
Total plate thickness typically ranges from 3 mm to 100 mm, depending on the application.
Width
Commonly between 1000 mm and 2500 mm.
Length
Usually 2000 mm to 12000 mm, with custom sizes available on request.
Titanium Cladding Layer
- Thickness of Titanium Layer: Normally 0.5 mm to 5.0 mm, customizable according to design requirements.
Titanium Grades:
ASTM B265 Grade 1 – Highest ductility, good formability.
Grade 2 – Good balance between strength and corrosion resistance (most commonly used).
Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) – High strength alloy for specialized applications.
Nickel or Nickel Alloy Substrate
Base Material Options:
- Nickel 200 / Nickel 201 – Commercially pure nickel with excellent resistance to caustic alkalis.
- Alloy 400 (Monel 400) – Nickel–copper alloy with excellent seawater and acid resistance.
- Alloy 600 / 625 / 825 (Inconel / Incoloy series) – High-temperature strength and oxidation resistance.
- Substrate Thickness: Typically 2 mm to 95 mm, depending on the required strength and design.
Bonding Process
Explosive Bonding
The most common method, forming a strong metallurgical bond at the interface without melting either metal.
Hot Roll Bonding or Diffusion Bonding
Alternative processes used for specific industrial needs.
Surface Finish
- Titanium Side: Mill finish, polished, or pickled according to ASTM B600.
- Nickel Side: Bright finish, cold-rolled, or ground surface.
Mechanical & Physical Properties
- Bond Strength: Typically ≥ 200 MPa (tested by shear strength).
- Tensile Strength: Determined mainly by the nickel substrate (e.g., 400–800 MPa).
- Corrosion Resistance: Excellent in strong acids, alkalis, and chloride-containing environments.
- Thermal Expansion Compatibility: The titanium–nickel pairing has good thermal compatibility compared to titanium–steel combinations.
Standards
Manufactured according to relevant international standards, such as:
- ASTM B898 – Explosively bonded clad metals.
- ASTM B265 – Titanium and titanium alloy plate, sheet, and strip.
- ASTM B162 / B127 – Nickel and nickel-alloy plate and sheet.
- ASME SB265 / SB162 / SB898 – Pressure vessel applications.
Applications
- Chemical processing equipment (reactors, heat exchangers, autoclaves)
- Desalination and marine engineering
- Electrolysis and chlor-alkali industry components
- Flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems
- Aerospace and energy industries
