Specifications
Titanium-copper clad plate is a composite material that consists of two distinct metal layers: titanium and copper. The titanium layer is typically on the outer surface, providing excellent corrosion resistance and strength, while the copper core offers excellent electrical and thermal conductivity. This combination of materials makes titanium-copper clad plates useful in applications requiring both corrosion resistance and high conductivity, such as in electrical components, heat exchangers, and certain chemical processing applications.
Material Composition
- Titanium Layer: The outer layer is typically made from commercially pure titanium (CP Ti) or titanium alloys, such as Grade 1, Grade 2, or Grade 5, depending on the specific requirements. This layer provides excellent corrosion resistance, especially in harsh environments such as seawater, chemical processing, and aerospace applications.
- Copper core: The core material is usually copper or copper alloys like C11000 , C12200 , or other copper grades. Copper is known for its high electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and ductility, making it suitable for applications that require heat dissipation or electrical conduction.
Thickness
Titanium Layer Thickness
Typically ranges from 0.1 mm to 3 mm, depending on the required corrosion resistance and strength of the final product.
Copper Core Thickness
Generally ranges from 0.5 mm to 10 mm, depending on the thermal or electrical conductivity needs of the application.
Total Thickness
The overall thickness of the titanium-copper clad plate usually ranges from 1 mm to 50 mm or more, with customized sizes available.
Cladding Bonding Method
The titanium and copper layers are bonded together through various methods, such as explosive bonding, roll bonding, or fusion welding. The bonding method ensures that the titanium and copper layers are strongly adhered together, providing high performance in both mechanical strength and thermal/electrical conductivity.
Dimensions
Width
Titanium-copper clad plates can be produced in widths ranging from 50 mm to 2000 mm or more, depending on the specific application and customer requirements.
Length
The length of the plates can vary from 300 mm to 6000 mm or more, depending on the customer's needs.
Surface Finish
The surface of the titanium layer may have a mill finish, polished finish, or etched finish, depending on the requirements for corrosion resistance, aesthetic quality, or application needs.
The copper surface can be left in its natural copper color, or it can be treated with an anti-oxidation coating, depending on the application (e.g., electrical connectors or heat exchangers).
Mechanical Properties
The mechanical properties of the titanium layer are typically consistent with the grade of titanium used. For example:
- Grade 2 Titanium: Tensile strength of around 350 MPa (50,000 psi) and yield strength of 275 MPa (40,000 psi).
- Grade 5 Titanium: Tensile strength of around 900 MPa (130,000 psi) and yield strength of 830 MPa (120,000 psi).
The copper core offers good ductility and conductivity but is much more flexible compared to titanium. Its tensile strength will typically range from 210 MPa to 250 MPa depending on the copper alloy used.
Thermal and Electrical Properties
- Thermal Conductivity: Copper provides excellent thermal conductivity, typically around 398 W/m·K at room temperature.
- Electrical Conductivity: Copper has high electrical conductivity (approximately 97% IACS (International Annealed Copper Standard)), which is ideal for applications such as electrical connectors, heat exchangers, and electronics cooling.
- Corrosion Resistance: The titanium layer offers excellent resistance to corrosion in a variety of harsh environments, including acids, chlorides, and seawater, making it suitable for applications in marine and chemical industries.
Applications
- Heat Exchangers: Titanium-copper clad plates are used in heat exchangers where high thermal conductivity is required along with corrosion resistance.
- Electrical Components: The combination of copper's electrical conductivity and titanium's corrosion resistance makes this material ideal for use in electrical connectors, busbars, and other high-performance electrical applications
- Chemical Processing: The titanium layer provides excellent resistance to aggressive chemicals, while the copper core helps with efficient heat dissipation.
- Aerospace: The plates may be used in applications requiring a combination of light weight, strength, and resistance to environmental factors.
- Marine Engineering: Due to the titanium's resistance to seawater corrosion, these clad plates are used in marine engineering applications like desalination plants or marine equipment.
Tolerances
Thickness Tolerances
Thickness tolerances are typically in the range of ± 0.1 mm to ± 0.5 mm depending on the specific requirements.
Length & Width Tolerances
Custom tolerances are typically provided based on the requirements of the application, but are often within ± 1 mm for length and width.
